The face behind the steel: I am Sonja
People often ask me how I ended up in this world of heavy metal, rust, and neon. The answer is simple: a completely escalated passion for items with a soul. I am Sonja, the driving force, buyer, hauler, and treasure hunter behind Heavy Stuff.
While others get excited about a sleek, new interior from a catalog, my heart beats faster for a well-worn factory lamp, an old doctor's cabinet, or a heavy steel workbench bearing the scars of decades of hard work. I prefer to be in my boots, covered in dust, at an old workshop somewhere in Europe, or spend hours searching for that one piece that moves me. No slick sales pitches, just pure love for industrial heritage and artisanal neon.
From neat shop to raw 'Vintage Barn'
Every good story has a beginning, and Heavy Stuff started in a regular shop. A nice place, but with an assortment that became heavier, larger, and rougher every week, I quickly started to outgrow it. Let's be honest: if you're weekly dragging around steel workbenches weighing hundreds of kilos and gigantic lightboxes, a standard shop unit with a neat display window quickly feels like a cage. It simply didn't fit anymore.
I didn't want a polished boutique where you whisper and are afraid to touch anything. I was looking for a place that was just as authentic and unpolished as the items I sell.
That's how the move to the Vintage Barn in Zwolle came about. A spacious, industrial warehouse that perfectly breathes what Heavy Stuff is. It's not a traditional showroom, but a treasure trove. A place where the smell of old iron and coffee hangs in the air, where you can browse among the finds, and where we have the space to make the neon pop. The move to the Barn also gave me ultimate freedom: fewer fixed opening hours behind a counter, and much more time to travel through Europe by bus, hunting for the next amazing find.

From heavy-duty industrial lamps to authentic neon: we make the technology 100% safe and functional again, but we don't compromise the weathered appearance. Discover why we repair, but never restore.

Online you get a sneak peek, but in person you'll truly experience the atmosphere. In our showroom in Zwolle, you can browse the new arrivals and hear the stories behind them. Among the larger furniture, you'll also find a warehouse full of distinctive accessories and eye-catching vintage neon signs, available for immediate purchase. No waiting (except for custom-designed texts and letters), just load up immediately!
